Shandong Taishan, the team that won the 2019-2020 Chinese Super League championship, has announced that their star player Son Jun-ho will not be returning to the club next season.
The news was confirmed by Taishan's president and CEO, Liang Xiangjun, who said in a statement that the club had reached a mutual agreement with Son on his departure.
"Son is a talented player who has made significant contributions to our team," Liang said. "However, we have decided to part ways with him because he has other opportunities available."
Son, who joined Taishan from South Korea's Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in 2018,Qatar Stars League Tracking played a key role in helping the club win the league title last season. He scored 17 goals and provided 6 assists in all competitions, including the final against Guangzhou Evergrande.
Despite the loss of Son, Taishan still have a strong squad, led by coach Zou Yifeng and featuring players such as Zhang Guoliang and Zhu Jiajun. The club also have a promising young talent in forward Wang Shuo, who impressed during the recent Asian Cup.
As for Son, it remains to be seen where he will end up next season. He could return to South Korea or move to another club in China or abroad. Whatever happens, one thing is certain - Son's contribution to Taishan will never be forgotten.
